Telcos to have Same Short Codes for Balance Check, Transfer, & Recharge

Same short code for all Telcos in Nepal
Now the short code used to get the balance information in the mobile, transfer the balance and recharge the mobile will be the same for all the service providers. The regulator Nepal Telecommunication Authority has made such arrangement by issuing short code and toll free number management procedure, 2077, used in telecommunication services.
Previously, service providers used their own code. *400# was used to check Nepal Telecom's mobile balance, *422# to transfer balance and *412# for recharge.

Similarly, Ncell used *101# to check mobile balance, *17122# to transfer balance and *102# to recharge.

In the case of smart cell, *123# was used to check mobile balance, *131# to transfer balance and *422# for recharge. Now all service providers have to use the same code.

According to the new procedure, all service providers will have to use 144 shortcodes to check balances, 133 to transfer balances and 122 to recharge within the next six months.

NTA has stated such a provision has been made for the convenience of the users.

According to the service provider, having different codes makes it difficult for users to remember, 'said NTA spokesperson Min Prasad Aryal.

More than that, the shortcode is a limited resource number. Aryal says that this procedure has been prepared and issued with the objective of making easy use of the telecommunication service provided by the service provider by making proper and maximum use of the number.

According to Aryal, the service provider will have to implement this provision within six months from the date of issuance of the procedure.

Also, after 6 months, for one year, the service provider can use both old and new codes in parallel. After one year, it is mentioned that only new code should be used as per the procedure.
