Nepal Electricity Authority has started smart meter connection. At the same time, NEA employees no longer have to go to the customer's house to read the meter.

NEA has started the work of smart meter connection from Sunday by removing the single phase meter in the houses of domestic customers. Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Barshaman Pun inaugurated the smart meter connection work.

He started it by replacing the single phase meter in Budhanilkantha Municipality-9 Ward Office, Mandikhatar in Kathmandu with a smart meter. According to NEA, the number of such single phase customers is currently around 5 million.

The authority has stated that the old meters in the houses of all the customers will be replaced. According to NEA, in the first phase, single phase meters of customers under Ratna Park and Maharajgunj distribution center will be replaced.

NEA Executive Director Kulman Ghising said that the obligation to go to the customer's house and read the meter will end as soon as the meter is connected. According to him, the control center of NEA will collect data on how much electricity has been consumed in the customer's house.

Similarly, customers will be able to pay electricity tariff from home through various online and digital payment systems. "More importantly, Staff costs required for meter reading after use of smart meter will reduce our costs," Ghising said.

It is also expected to help establish a modern system in the field of overall power transmission and consumption.
